The National Center for Transgender Equality

The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE)–now merged as Advocates for Transgender Equality (A4TE) is a leading social justice advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the rights and dignity of transgender people across the United States. NCTE partnered with me to create a video that amplifies the voices of transgender individuals and their families, highlighting the importance of equality, acceptance, and the ongoing fight for justice.

This project required a sensitive and thoughtful approach to storytelling, as the video aimed to humanize the struggles and triumphs of the transgender community. Through intimate interviews and powerful visuals, the video sheds light on the lived experiences of transgender people, emphasizing the need for policy change and societal understanding.

As the director and producer, I worked closely with NCTE to ensure the video balanced emotional resonance with a clear call to action, encouraging viewers to support transgender rights and join the movement for equality. Family Equality

Family Equality is the nation’s foremost organization supporting LGBTQ+ families and those who wish to form them. They approached me to create a heartfelt storytelling video featuring Jaymes Black, their former CEO, and their deeply personal journey of family, identity, and acceptance.

The video centers on Jaymes’ relationship with their father, tracing the evolution of his acceptance from the moment Jaymes came out to the joy of becoming a parent themselves. This project required a delicate balance of emotional storytelling and visual elegance to capture the nuances of their story.

I collaborated closely with Family Equality to ensure the video authentically represented Jaymes’ experiences while aligning with the organization’s mission of celebrating LGBTQ+ families. Through intimate interviews and evocative visuals, the video not only highlights the challenges of coming out but also the transformative power of love and acceptance within families.

The final piece serves as a testament to the resilience of LGBTQ+ families and a call to action for greater understanding and inclusion.

The Center for Cultural Power

The Center for Cultural Power is an artist-led organization that empowers artists and culture makers to envision a world rooted in justice, equity, and liberation. They partnered with me to create Some Reflections on Abortion, a short video series that amplifies the voices of leaders from The Lilith Fund and Avow, two organizations at the forefront of the fight for reproductive justice.

The goal of this project was to move beyond the soundbites and headlines of traditional media, offering a deeper, more nuanced exploration of abortion access through the lenses of self-determination, intersectionality, and the dismantling of stigma. The series invites viewers to reflect on the connections between reproductive justice, racial justice, and care economies, centering the experiences of BIPOC and queer and trans communities who are most impacted by systemic inequities.

As the producer, editor, and art director, I led the creative and technical execution of the series, working closely with a director to bring this vision to life. My role encompassed everything from shaping the visual identity and tone of the videos, to hiring crew, and supervising the post-production phase of the project, to ensuring the stories were told with authenticity and care. The project required a delicate balance of artistry and activism.

The result is a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant series that challenges viewers to think critically about abortion access as a fundamental human right. By weaving together personal narratives and radical politic, the videos serve as a powerful tool for advocacy, education, and cultural transformation.

Abortion Care Network

The Abortion Care Network (ACN) is a national organization dedicated to supporting independent abortion providers and ensuring access to compassionate, high-quality abortion care. They partnered with me to create a powerful and intimate conversation between feminist icon Dorothy Pittman Hughes and her daughter, Angela, exploring the intersections of abortion, activism, and the future of reproductive justice.

This project aimed to highlight the intergenerational legacy of activism within the reproductive justice movement, offering a personal and profound perspective on the ongoing fight for abortion rights. Dorothy Pittman Hughes, a trailblazing feminist and civil rights activist, and her daughter Angela shared their experiences, insights, and hopes for the future, creating a dialogue that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

As the director, producer, and editor, I was responsible for every aspect of the video’s creation—from conceptualizing the visual style and tone to capturing the conversation on camera and shaping the final edit. The project required a thoughtful approach to storytelling, as we sought to honor Dorothy and Angela’s voices while ensuring the video’s message would inspire and mobilize viewers.

The result is a moving and thought-provoking piece that bridges the past, present, and future of reproductive justice. By centering the voices of two generations of activists, the video underscores the importance of intergenerational dialogue and collective action in the fight for abortion access and equity.

Gerda Stevenson Sings Us a Song

This project captures a quiet, intimate moment with Gerda Stevenson, a renowned Scottish actress, playwright, and musician, at her home in the Pentland Hills of Scotland. After a day of filming, as the camera and sound equipment were turned off, the stillness of the landscape took over. The cold wind, the expansive view of the hills, and the open field behind Gerda’s house—left untouched for children to play in—created a profound sense of peace and connection to the land.

When I turned to Gerda and remarked on the beauty of the surroundings, she simply laughed and replied, “Well, yes. You’re in Scotland.” This moment, though unrecorded, encapsulates the essence of the video: a celebration of place, simplicity, and the quiet beauty of life.

As the director and producer, I sought to create a visual narrative that honored Gerda’s deep connection to her homeland and the natural world. The video is a meditative exploration of landscape, identity, and the interplay between art and environment. It invites viewers to pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty of the everyday.

Unity in Color

Unity in Color is a global photography series that celebrates inclusive solidarity for women’s equality, bringing together people from all walks of life to stand in support of gender equity. The project uses the vibrant colors of yellow and gold as a nod to earlier feminist movements and ancient symbols of the divine feminine, while emphasizing the importance of intersectionality in today’s fight for equality.

This event recap video captures the energy, passion, and unity of the Unity in Color movement. Through dynamic visuals and powerful moments, the video showcases participants from around the world wearing yellow and gold, standing together in solidarity for women’s rights. The goal of the video was to not only document the event but also to inspire viewers to join the movement and reflect on the importance of inclusive feminism.

As the director, producer, and editor, I was tasked with creating a video that would encapsulate the spirit of the event while amplifying its message of intersectional feminism. The project required a keen eye for storytelling and a deep understanding of the movement’s values, as we aimed to create a piece that was both visually striking and emotionally resonant.

The final video serves as a celebration of collective action and a call to continue the fight for women’s equality. It highlights the power of unity and the importance of centering diverse voices in the ongoing struggle for justice and equity.

Troubador by Jason Bayani

Write Bloody Poetry, an independent press dedicated to promoting performance poets and their work, commissioned me to direct and produce a poetic short film featuring Jason Bayani, a celebrated poet and performer. This project was created as a tribute to Jason’s artistry and his impact on the Austin poetry scene before his move away from the city.

This poetic short film is a visual interpretation of Jason’s powerful spoken word poetry, blending his evocative words with striking imagery to create an immersive and emotional experience. The goal was to capture the essence of his work—its rawness, vulnerability, and unflinching honesty—while showcasing his unique voice as an artist.

As the director and producer, I was responsible for conceptualizing the visual narrative, coordinating the production, and ensuring the final piece stayed true to Jason’s vision and the spirit of his poetry. The project required a deep collaboration with Jason to translate his spoken word into a cinematic format, resulting in a piece that is both intimate and expansive.

Interstate Vision by Lomelda – Music Video

Musician Hannah Read, known for her work as the frontwoman of the indie band Lomelda, approached me to create a lighthearted and creative music video which I centered around a pick-up basketball game. The project was designed to showcase our love for the sport.

This project required a flexible and collaborative approach, as we aimed to create a video that felt spontaneous and genuine while still being visually engaging. From coaching a rag tag team of queers through the basics of basketball to capturing the candid moments of laughter and determination, the video is a celebration of growth, community, and the unexpected intersections of art and sport. It’s also a testament to my ability to bring unconventional ideas to life with creativity and a sense of fun.
